What is Microsoft Business Central?

It is a modern ERP system or software designed for comprehensive management of all business processes and resources. With Business Central you can manage and control accounting, purchasing and sales, warehouse management, production, customer relations and many other agendas related to routine business activities from one place. A great advantage is the unification of data into one database, where all modules of the system use the same data.

What is the difference between Business Central, NAV and Navision? Are they the same thing?

These are different versions of the same system. Dynamics 365 Business Central is the most modern and technologically advanced version. It was preceded by Microsoft Dynamics NAV, which evolved from a solution called Navision.

Does Business Central work in the cloud?

Yes. The latest versions of Business Central take full advantage of cloud architecture and their data is backed up on secure Microsoft servers.

Can Business Central work on-premise?

Yes. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is also available in an on-premise version, i.e. on its own servers. Before you decide on one of the deployment methods, we recommend considering all the pros and cons.

Can we implement and set up Business Central ourselves?

As a complex ERP system, Business Central has a significantly more complex implementation, as compared to simple accounting systems or other applications solely focused on partial agendas it offers incomparably more functions and tools. It's not just about the installation itself – to make the system really serve you well it needs to be adapted to the specifics of your company based on an analysis of your internal processes, and your employees then need training for the solution.

To manage all of the above, we therefore strongly recommend using the services of trained consultants from certified partners. Is Business Central difficult to learn?

The developers of the solution have devoted considerable effort to user-friendliness and clarity, thanks to which the basics of working with the system can be learned in one day. Many customers switching from legacy ERP systems report that Business Central is much easier to work with than the older solution.

Can Dynamics Business Central be used as a CRM solution?

Although Business Central offers basic CRM functionality, it is not a fully-fledged customer relationship management solution. For this purpose we recommend Microsoft Dynamics 365 Sales – a comprehensive CRM solution that is closely integrated with Business Central.

What types of user licences does Business Central offer?

The basic licences are Essentials and Premium. These are the so-called full user licences designed for professions that need the maximum available Business Central functions for their work. Premium licence holders also have access to modules for service management and production management. The third type of licence is Team Members, designed for users without the need to use the full range of Business Central functions (see below).

Can I have both Premium and Essentials licences at the same time?

No. When purchasing licences, you must select one type for all Business Central users.

What options do users have under the Team Member licence?

The Team Members licence is primarily aimed at viewing or lightly processing data from users with higher licences and allows basic tasks such as updating records or searching customer data. In practice it is thus primarily intended for rank-and-file employees who only need a small fraction of Business Central's tools and applications to do their jobs.

How much does it cost to purchase a Dynamics 365 Business Central licence?

Licences range in price from $8 for a Team Member licence to $100 for a Premium licence. The complete pricing in USD can be found on Microsoft's official website.

How long does it take to implement Business Central?

The implementation process involves more than just installing the software itself. It also includes analysing existing processes, designing the ideal solution, training employees and other related tasks. The implementation takes several months, its duration varies from case to case, because it depends on the complexity of the processes, modifications, requirements and time options of the customer.

Does Business Central offer e-commerce tools?

Not in the basic version. However, there is a wide selection of extension modules available that allow Business Central to connect with existing e-commerce solutions such as Shopify or Shoptet. You can also choose from a wide range of e-commerce solutions tailored to Business Central users, available through the AppSource online store.

Is Dynamics 365 Business Central the right ERP for manufacturing companies?

For production management, Business Central uses a powerful and improved module, which follows on from its popular predecessor in the Dynamics NAV system. Like other parts of Business Central, the manufacturing module is designed for easy expansion with the specialised applications available on AppSource.

Does Business Central support cost accounting?

Of course! In all versions of Business Central you will find a clear accounting module offering a range of useful features including cost accounting. Customers looking for production costing tools can then use the Premium edition, which offers various other production management tools in addition to costing.

Can I use Business Central in my browser?

Yes. Business Central is now available only via a web browser, both online and on-premise. So there is no need to install any programs on your device.
