What are Power Apps?

It is a powerful tool that enables organisations to develop their own low-code and no-code applications without the need for external vendors. As a result companies can quickly and efficiently automate processes that previously depended on manual processing.

Together with Power BI, Power Automate and Power Virtual Agents, Power Apps then form the powerful Power Platform platform, or a comprehensive set of tools for process automation, data collection and processing.

What are Power Apps for?

The platform is designed for rapid development of simple applications tailored for web browsers and mobile devices. These apps can then be used for a wide range of tasks – they can automate business processes, create data reports, build on top of existing enterprise systems or digitise repetitive manual tasks.

What can Power Apps help me with?

Existing customers have found many uses for Power Apps, including:

  • Fleet management,
  • grant fund management,
  • invoice approval,
  • e-commerce shopping cart,
  • familiarisation with company policies,
  • and much more.

What app development options does Power Apps offer?

Users have two options for creating applications – a canvas model and a data-driven model.

The canvas model creates applications using a blank virtual canvas on which the user places individual components via drag-and-drop. The components can then be connected via more than 350 different connectors, giving the canvas model a high degree of flexibility. At the same time it is a very intuitive and clear way of development.

The model-driven model is based on a so-called common data service (Dataverse) or secure data repository. From this repository, the model-driven approach then adopts standardised data and entities covering typical user scenarios. Although this model is less intuitive than the canvas approach, it allows the creation of significantly more sophisticated applications running complex logical operations. They are also more responsive and adapt better to the target device.

How long does it take to develop such an app?

Thanks to pre-made templates and an intuitive graphical interface that supports drag-and-drop, creating applications is very fast and extremely easy.  Best of all, you don't need any programming or coding skills to work with Power Apps.

What devices do Power Apps support?

All of them! The platform can be used fully on any device, from desktops to laptops to tablets and smartphones. Of course, both Android and iOS operating systems are supported.

Can I use Power Apps offline?

Of course! On the go or out of the office, you can work on your laptop or mobile device, even without an internet connection. In this case, Power Apps saves all your work to local storage and automatically syncs it as soon as you come back online.

Do I need a licence to use Power Apps?

Yes, you do. But the good news is that the Power Apps licence is included with all Microsoft 365 licensing plans. There is also a premium licence that is required for more advanced application features (e.g., connecting to external data sources via SQL).

What types of licences does Power Apps offer?

The solution is offered in two basic models:

  1. Individual per-app plan allowing each user to run 2 apps in a defined business scenario; this option is ideal for an initial introduction to the capabilities of Power Apps.
  2. A per-user plan where each user has their own licence with unlimited apps; this plan is primarily for organisations with a need for multiple apps across users.

Both of the above licence types are funded by monthly payments. For the first plan, expect a price of $10 per month, per application and per user, while the second plan will set you back $40 per month per user.

Does the Power Apps licence include Power Automate?

Yes, it does. But you can only use Power Automate tools in this context within Power Apps, or the data flows must use the same data as Power Apps. If you need to use Power Automate for external flows, you cannot do without purchasing a separate Power Automate licence.

Who can buy a licence?

With the self-purchase model, Power Apps can be purchased by any organisation – all you need to do is visit the admin. centre of your Microsoft 365 solution (as long as the licence purchase option is enabled by your administrator). All purchases are monitored and can of course be easily tracked by your IT department.
